Dr. Tom G. Stevens is a psychologist professor emeritus at California State University, Long Beach; where he worked in the Counseling and Psychological Services Center for 31 years. His four degrees include a PhD in Psychology from the University of Hawaii and a Master of Theology from the Claremont School of Theology.
His pursuit of understanding how people can learn to be happy and more productive began with a life-altering experience at age 16, when he chose to make happiness for self and others a top goal in his life.
Dr. Stevens' professional contributions include a number of publications and papers. Specialty areas include of self-management and emotional coping, interpersonal communication, career and life planning, assertion training, life skills training, habit change, and artificial intelligence. His early Life Skills Questionnaire research was a four-year study of factors contributing to the happiness and success of over 4,000 people. He also led a series of experimental studies on life skills training. All ten experimental studies found positive effects. He and his wife Sherry developed the SRQ relationship questionnaire which had high correlations with relationship happiness. He also developed ANDY, a computer program utilizing artificial intelligence to assess and advise college students. He developed several college courses to help people learn self-management, career, and interpersonal skills. Thousands of people have participated in these courses.
Dr. Stevens used the term Spiritual Cognitive Therapy to designate a psychotherapy approach that varies from traditional cognitive therapy by focusing more upon people s top values and beliefs.
After writing the first edition of his book, You Can Choose To Be Happy: "Rise Above" Anxiety, Anger, and Depression, he wanted more proof that this book was valid, so he developed the free, online questionnaire, SHAQ (The Success and Happiness Attributes Questionnaire), by going through each chapter, taking each main idea, and turning it into questions. He correlated these questions (and related scales) with 3446 SHAQ users’ emotional and life success measures. SHAQ scales correlated with Happiness, .87; with Low Depression, .73; with Low Anxiety, .68; with Low Anger-Aggression, .70; with Relationship Success, .70; and with good results for career success measures. Correlations this high are rarely found in this type of research. His HQ (Happiness Quotient) formula summarizes these results. Dr. Stevens believes his greatest success is living a happy life and helping others find happiness.

SHAQ also tests for self-esteem and self-confidence; intimacy and assertive conflict-resolution skills; causes of anxiety, depression, and anger; emotional coping and time management skills; internal control; optimism vs. pessimism; factors influencing memory, learning, and academic success; and other factors. Want help with emotions, intimate relationships, meeting people or shyness, non-assertiveness, negative thinking, learning, personal growth, or many of the personal problems on this page? Also, see links to many other self-help topics and checked web sites specifically related to your SHAQ results.
Research Paper on Results Related to the Happiness Quotient (HQ) Formula Factors, Book Ideas, and SHAQ Questionnaire. This is a professional research paper describing the research methods and results of the study on 3446 people who took SHAQ and various outcome scales on the Internet. The results strongly supported the utility of SHAQ, the ideas in the book, and the power of the HQ formula.
My Personal Experience
When I was an infant I couldn’t choose to be happy, I didn’t have the cognitive structures required to make a conscious choice. I didn’t even know the word happy.
I depended on my environment to make me happy; my parents provided my food, care, and much of my stimulation. Once I learned what the word happy meant, I had more choices.
I tried to make myself happy, but I had little knowledge of how to do it. I was often happy, but it was because I was lucky— I had a pretty good environment.
It was not because I knew much about how to make myself happy.
One day I decided to make happiness my top goal.
Over the years, I learned a lot more about how to make myself happy, and I developed my skills. Creating those mental structures (my Higher Self) increased my Happiness Quotient (HQ) and my happiness power.
Now, I can choose to be happy, and I have a good chance of being successful.
I have had a happy life for which I am very grateful.
Without knowledge, we have little choice and little power.
With knowledge, we can transcend our environment and even our own biology to soar to new levels of living.
I hope this book has contributed to your journey to self-actualization.
I hope it has strengthened your Higher Self, so that you can choose to be happy. I wish you a happy life!
