Lisa Young, PhD, RD is a nationally
recognized nutritionist in New York City
and an adjunct professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and
Public Health at New York University (NYU). She is an expert on portion control
and author of The Portion Teller Plan: The
No-Diet Reality Guide to Eating, Cheating, and Losing Weight Permanently published in 2005 by Doubleday
Broadway, a division of Random House.
Widely
considered an expert on portion sizes, Dr. Lisa Young
is regularly featured in national publications including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Boston Globe, the Washington
Post, Allure, Self, Fitness, and Redbook. She has also been
featured on national television including the Today Show, ABC
News, CBS News, NBC
News, FOX News, and CNN, and was in the film
Super Size Me.
Dr. Young’s book The Portion Teller Plan, a user-friendly weight-loss guide, has
been widely featured in the national press and received terrific reviews. The Wall Street Journal and O, The Oprah Magazine, named The Portion Teller Plan one of six best
new health books of 2005.
Dr. Lisa
Young is a nutritionist in private practice and has been counseling
adults and children for nearly 20 years. Young offers individual counseling sessions
on a wide variety of nutrition related issues including obesity and weight
control, disease prevention, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes,
osteoporosis, vegetarianism, pregnancy, lactation, food allergies, and
gastrointestinal disease. She has also been involved in obesity research at the
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine’s Psychiatry Department and at
St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center; and has consulted for various weight
management programs in New York City.
Dr. Young
lectures throughout the country and conducts group classes on nutrition, weight
control, and behavior modification. She has lectured at prestigious meetings
including the American Heart Association, the American Public Health
Association, and the American Dietetic Association annual conventions. She regularly
lectures at wellness spas, resorts, and schools. She has also served as a
nutrition expert for Allure, Fitness, Prevention, and Marie Claire magazines and contributes
articles to various health magazines and newsletters. She writes a column for
the Bottom Line Health newsletter, has
contributed to MSNBC, and is an advisory board
member for Bottom Line Women’s Health and Fitness
magazine.
Young is also
the author of numerous academic publications published in professional journals
including the American Journal of Public
Health, Journal of the American
Dietetic Association, Journal of Public Health Policy, Nutrition
Reviews, and International Journal of
Obesity. Her research interests focus on the contribution of increasing
portion sizes to the US
obesity epidemic, and its implications for nutrition education and public policy.
Dr. Young
is a member of various professional organizations including the American
Dietetic Association (ADA), the American Public Health Association (APHA), the
Greater New York Dietetic Association, and Nutrition Entrepreneurs (NE), a
dietary practice group of the ADA. In
2006, she was named Woman of Action
by the Israel Cancer Research Fund.
Young received
her doctorate and master’s degrees in Nutrition from NYU, and her bachelor’s
degree in Economics and Health Care Administration from the Wharton
School of the University
of Pennsylvania. She is also a registered dietitian.
