September 1993 to March 1999, Memphis, TN - Apprentice/DEM/Jr Midwife Partner: Kim completed a full-time, comprehensive, midwifery apprenticeship with the Home Birth Midwifery Service (HBMS), under the mentorship of Margie McSweeney, RN/CPM, earning the designation as a Direct-Entry Midwife (DEM) at that time. Under the supervision of her mentor, Kim learned the art and skills of home birth midwifery. Kim’s apprenticeship training involved self-study and hands-on clinical experience at prenatal/postpartum clinic, home visits, childbirth education classes, and during home births. Kim practiced as a junior-partner with HBMS while completing NARM clinical requirements, pursuing the CPM credential.
May 1999 to August 2008, Memphis, TN - CPM, Staff Midwife Partner: In May of 1999, Kim earned the credential Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM). Afterwhich, she became a senior-partner of HBMS and fully managing the practice while her midwifery partner enjoyed a summer-long sabbatical, afterwhich the partnership was transferred to Kim and new partner. In 2000, after five years of legislative effort by the Legislative Committee of the Tennessee Midwives Association, of which Kim served as a key member, the TN Midwifery Practice Act (T.C.A. 63-29) was signed into law. After a year of implementation, rule-making, and development of the application process, Kim was among the first CPMs to receive the TN state midwifery license (CPM-TN) in February 2002. Two apprentices mentored under Kim, both of whom have become CPMs. In 2004, Kim became Sole Proprietor of the practice when her partner moved to Germany.
November 2006 to June 2008, Memphis, TN - Staff Midwife, OB/Gyn Practice: In addition to her home birth practice, Kim was brought on as a staff midwife for Women’s Generational Care, PLLC, with Dr. Gina Wilson, OB/Gyn. Kim provided in-office prenatal care, well woman care, and childbirth education for the physician’s patients, as well as working as front and back office ancillary staff including: reception, medical assisting, and inventory.
August 2008 to October 2012, Midlothian (Richmond), VA - Solo Midwifery Practice: Kim moved her midwifery practice to Midlothian VA, where the need for a home birth, mentor midwife was in high demand. Kim provided comprehensive maternity care services to low-risk women in the greater-Richmond area within a 90-mile radius of her Midlothian office. She attended 24-48 home births per year, mentoring seven apprentices/student midwives, six whom are now CPMs and the seventh who is preparing the take the NARM exam. As a compliment to her midwifery practice, Kim offered Holistic Health Counseling and related services to child bearing-age women in a variety of areas: Nutrition, Fitness & Wellness, Herbal & Holistic Remedies, Breastfeeding Consultation, Maternity & Infant Massage, Reiki Energy Work, Relaxation & Visualization, Natural Birth Preparation, Well Woman & Well Baby Care, Belly Casting and Blessingways.
August 2012 to September 2014, Charlottesville, VA - Staff Midwife, Birth Center: Staff Midwife at The Birthing Place ~ Birth & Midwifery Center. As a staff midwife, Kim provided comprehensive midwifery services to the center’s clientele, mentoring four midwifery students (two whom are now CPMs), and assisting the director with a myriad of responsibilities including administrative/clerical/office duties, advertising/marketing & event booths, inventory/supplies, student education/training/in-service, client education, community events, etc.
September 2014 to December 2015, Lehi, UT - Midwifery Sabbatical: Kim temporarily relocated to Utah to care for her pregnant daughter, assisting her at the home birth of her grand daughter (DOB: May 20, 2015). After this sabbatical, Kim accepted a midwifery position in Texas.
December 2015 to present, Houston, TX - Staff Midwife, Birth Center: In late 2015, Kim moved to Texas, accepting a position as a Staff Midwife (first as an Independent Contractor and a year later hired as a full-time employee) from owner/administrator of the West Houston Birth Center, Holly Shearman. Kim serves as Staff Midwife, Assistant to the Administrator, and Registered NARM Preceptor for students in training. Kim maintains her Texas state licensure credentials (CPM, LM) according to their respective requirements, including both the NARM CPM recertification and preceptor registration, on-going Continuing Education Units (CEUs) including B.E.S.T. workshop (Feb 2017) with Andrea Dixon, BLS HealthCare Provider Adult & Infant CPR Certification, and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) Certification. Kim is also an AOP Certified Entity, trained by the Texas Office of the Attorney General (August 2017) and Certified Hearing Screener for TEHDI.
Midwifery-Related Ancillary Positions: Kim was a governor-appointed member and Chair of the Advisory Board for Midwifery for the Department of Health Professions under the VA Board of Medicine (2012–2014). She served as the President and Interim-Treasurer, and member of the Executive Officers and Board of Directors for the Virginia Midwives Alliance (VMA). Kim is formerly the Vice-Chairperson for the Council of Certified Professional Midwifery for the Tennessee Dept of Health, under the Board of Osteopathic Examination. She has served as President, Vice-President, West TN Regional Representative, Practice Guidelines Committee Chair, and Legislative Committee member for the Tennessee Midwives’ Association (TMA). Kim formerly chaired the Nominations & Elections Committee (1998-2003) for the Midwives’ Alliance of North America (MANA); and was an original member of the Interim Board of Directors for the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives (NACPM). Kim served as “Resident CPM” on the Statistics Committee for the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM), helping to administrate the NARM-CPM Statistics Project 2000. This large prospective study was the foundation research instrument for the publication of the study, Outcomes Of Planned Home Births With Certified Professional Midwives: Large Prospective Study In North America, by Kenneth C Johnson, Betty-Anne Daviss, in the British Medical Journal, June 2005.
Speaking Engagements and Other Midwifery Related Activities: Kim maintains an active social media presence, with posts on Twitter, FaceBook, and her own blog, Inside the Midwife’s Bag – Insight into the life & work of a home birth midwife.
Kim offers lectures to various civic, educational, and healthcare groups regarding “The History of Midwifery,” “Modern Midwifery,” & “Natural Childbirth ~ You CAN Do it!” along with various other topics related to alternative birth options. Kim conducts midwifery training seminars, workshops and lectures related to clinical and business aspects of the profession, including her well-received: Holistic Midwifery Skills Practicum,and Venipuncture & IV Skills Workshop,
