Dr John McMahon has a PhD in psychology. He has worked in the alcohol and drug field in various capacities for around 25 years. In that time Dr. McMahon has been a therapist, has designed and run treatment interventions for both alcohol and drug problems. He has carried out research on treatment efficacy, the nature of and how to measure motivation to change, and binge drinking and drinking culture and published approximately 50 articles in scholarly journals and books and has given presentations at numerous national and international conferences.
Dr. McMahon is currently a senior lecturer in the biggest post-graduate course on alcohol and drugs in the UK and research supervisor for 4 PhD students and around 25 MSc students.
He is a board member and research director of a large treatment agency in Central Scotland and was previously Chairman of the National Therapist Training Committee for alcohol counsellors.
He has organized three international conferences on addiction. He regularly undertakes consultancy work for local and national organizations carrying out evaluations of treatment specifically or services in general and have written action plans, strategies and bespoke training courses.
He has also helped organizations with data collection, organization and analysis, for it is only through testing and evaluating our practice we can tell what actually works.

Really very excited. 24/7 Help Yourself has just gone live. This unique website is the culmination of over a year of work. I built it for people who were worried their drinking, who think they may be drinking too much, who want to do something about it, but don't want to go to a doctor or AA.
If you feel that describes you then 24/7 Help Yourself is a new concept that puts you in charge of your life and your drinking. Based on the latest research 24/7 Help Yourself is designed to give you the tools to empower you to change your life. Sign up FREE.
Depending who you are and what your interest is, there are various ways of getting started with me.
If you are interested in getting in touch for research, service evaluation, courses, or some other professional reason I am always happy to hear from you. If you just want to swap experiences, opinions or general fat chewing, again I am happy to hear from you, but may be a bit slower at answering but I will get there. Click on the contact tab at the top of the page and fill in the form that appears.
In my next project I am interested in interviewing partners of problem drinkers about their experiences and their methods of coping. If you are the partner of a problem drinker, current or past, and are willing to be interviewed (by phone) please get in touch. As an initial phase to this project, we are inviting questions from partners of drinkers. We feel that you are a neglected group by the treatment industry and the little support provided appears to bear little resemblance to what you actually need or want. To rectify this neglect we have created a membership website especially for partners of drinkers. We call it Bottled Up.
