I have worked or been involved in some sort of health or fitness profession since 1973 and actually was a Medical Explorer Scout during High School at Allen East High School in Lafayette Ohio.
I was certified as a Medical Technologist in 1977 and have worked in hospital and Clinical Laboratories since 1976. My main training was through the US Navy which I left in 1976. I also took courses at Ohio State University, Southeastern Massechussetts University and Western New Mexico University.
In 1978 I joined the Ohio National Guard 1/148th Infantry in Lima Ohio as a Combat Field Medic, while working full time at Lima Memorial Hospital as a Medical Technologist and attending Ohio State University- Lima Campus. Serving in the Guard as a Combat Field Medic was quite an experience and during the time there I was awarded the Ohio Award of Merit and the Ohio Special Services Ribbon for my efforts during the Tornadoes and floods of 1981.
1992 while working at Stanton County Hopsital in Johnson Kansas as the Laboratory Manager I completed courses and studied Naturopathy from the Clayton College of Natural Healing in Birmingham Alabama. I re-enlisted in the National Guard while here and served with an Artillery Unit at Garden City and Dodge City Kansas.
1995 We moved to South Georgia, I took a job with Worth County Hospital in Sylvester Georgia and I ballooned up to 240 lbs. This was my higheset weight since High School and I knew that I had to do something , so I started finding everything I could about nutrition, health, fitness and entered a contest with my wife Ruth called the Body For Life.
Body For Life was the brainchild of the brilliant marketer and fitness Guru Bill Phillips in a way to promote his new company EAS. The BFL contest and the information and training that I got from it has probably saved my life and now I am in better physical condition at 56 than I was at 25.
My wife and I began going to a gym and we started riding our bikes again and we completed two of the BFL Contests. I found that I was being asked at the gym about a lot of things, the owner was not around much in the morning so my wife and I would help the others when they needed it. I soon became interested in becoming a Personal Trainer and was Certified in 1998 by the now defunct National Academy of Health and Fitness.
During this time I also got back into cycling. I had done some as Therapy for an injured knee while I was in the Navy, but hadn't really done any since that. When we started going to the gym we also started riding to and from the Gym which was about 2 miles from the house.
In 1998 I rode my bicycle 150 miles for the "Bikes or Bust" fund raiser of the Toys for Tots and raised slightly over 1000.00 by getting my fellow employees to sponsor me on a per mile basis. I did this on a 10 speed RoadMaster Mountain Fury (60.00) bike.
I have always enjoyed helping others and so I answered questions about fitness, nutrition, cycling, weight training, weight loss etc on Askme.com. When they changed formats I went to allexperts.com and you can find me listed as an expert in bicycling and weightlifting-body building at allexperts.com I have been answering questions there since 2000 and have maintained a best of the best rating for several years now.
In September of 2007 I purchased my first Road Bike, a Giant OCR2 and it didn't take long before I was racing it. I picked it up September 4 and raced in the Georgia Golden Olympics 20 days later. In the Golden Olympics I took 3rd place in the 5K Time Trial and then took second place in both the 20K Road Race and the 10K Time Trial. A Bronze medal and two Silvers in my first Golden Olympics, believe me I was elated.
2008 I continue to answer questions on allexperts.com and write articles which are submitted to ezinearticles.com where I am listed as a Platinum Level Author. I also continue to train for cycling events.
November 16, 2008 I rode my bicycle in the Horrible Hundred a 100 Mile ride put on by the Florida Freewheelers in Orlando. Great ride, anything but Horrible. Now the hills, they were Horrible. The Freewheelers had lots of food, lots of things to do, numerous vendors. altogether a great experience.
The year of 2009 has been a busy one so far as My two Grandchildren have started riding BMX, Jason 9 and Kevin 7are riding out of the Parks at Chehaw in Albany Georgia. I will be riding a lot with them, as well as riding my road bike in various rides such as Biking Bleckley, the Nut Roll and Caroline's Ride.
On August 29th, 2009 I will be riding and helping to organize Caroline's ride which is a fundraising bicycle ride to help Caroline Baileys family with expenses related to the treatment of neurofibromastosis which causes her to grow tumors under her skin. Hers are so severe that they are causing pressure on the aorta and reducing the supply of blood to her vital organs. You can check out everything at http:///www.carolinesride.com
Wow, Carolines's Ride began as a 65 Mile 100K fundraising bicycle ride and has ballooned into a full scale event. We will now be having a Classic Car Cruise In, a 50 K Ride, a 5 K Run, face painting, bouncy houses, possibly balloons, and the Chad "Big Bank" Barfield the professional wrestler from Tifton Georgia is coming home to help little Caroline, and he is bringing some buddies from the GPW with him. They will be having a meet and greet as well as at least 3 possibly more matches that afternnon. If you have a chance and can get here, come to Tifton Georgia on August 29th, 2009 Tift High School's Norteast Campus will be hopping.
