I love pets. I’ve always had pets – growing up my house usually had 3 cats and 2 dogs. I was raised by an Australian shepherd mutt named Heather. When we would go to the beach, my mom didn’t need to keep an eye on me because Heather would herd me away from the water. Our cat Demelza let me dress her up in doll clothes (until I was 5 years old and then she decided she had had enough!). Our cat Kiga (my attempt at saying “Tiger” when I was very little) adopted me and would sleep in my bed every night. The first pet I had on my own was a long-haired hamster named Scooter. He only lived for a year and I was devastated when he died, even if I didn’t actually find him that interesting when he was alive since he had no interest in interacting with me. I also had great companionship from cats Fuzzy and Elmo and dogs Fred and Beauregard (who we are caring for right now and is just as spunky as he was as a puppy even though he’s 17, deaf, going blind, and has no teeth!).
When I went to college, as soon as I moved out of student housing, I got a pair of cats named Adelaide and Tall Dark & Handsome (aka Mr. T). They were middle-aged when I adopted them from the shelter and were brother and sister. They were both wonderfully sweet cats and so important to me. They would road-trip with me from Portland to Seattle for visits to my parents over the holidays and moved with me to San Francisco. I cannot think of better companions to have had through my 20’s. After Adelaide died and Adam and I moved in together, we got Mr. T a younger companion in Le Tigre (aka Tig). Tig is our only pet at the moment because of our lifestyle over the last couple of years of living in SF apartments and traveling. She has grown into a wonderful companion in her own right with her insistent snuggling and curious nature.
As soon as we have a home of our own (in the next couple of months I hope!) I plan on getting a dog (or two) and another cat (or two) and chickens. And I tease Adam about also getting goats and bunnies and sugar gliders and ferrets and penguins and the list goes on :) I am definitely happiest when surrounded by a menagerie.
I haven’t done much sewing that directly relates to my love of our pets (other than a few cat beds), but they are a constant companion through all of my sewing and knitting. A WIP pile just isn’t the same without a cat sleeping on it, a pattern not appropriately cut unless a cat has walked across it, a skein of yarn unfinished unless it has been swatted at. If I’m sewing, Tig (and Mr. T and Adelaide before her) is sitting on the table next to me. If I’m knitting, she’s in my lap. And that’s the way it should be.
Do you have pets? Are they companions through your making?
Each week this year I’m going to reflect on an aspect of myself and how it affects me as a sewist, crafter, or blogger. It may get deep, it may get emotional, it may get totally silly. It may be something I’m proud of, it may be something I cringe at, it may be something I aspire to. I may say a lot, I may say a little, I may ask questions, I may not answer them. I don’t quite know where the project will take me, but I’m excited about the journey. I’d be honored to have you join me on this journey.
