I am licensed to commit mayhem as a psychologist in Connecticut since 1976 where I have practiced, along with an office in NYC until 1999. I continue to see individual clients for career management/counseling/planning. Over the years, it has become most apparent to me that my work is primarily political, not just psychological. The preamble of our Constitution asserts that we, the People, have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is predicated on the ability to achieve some level of emotional and mental health. Freud tells us that mental health is built on two legs, Love and Work and I have dedicated my life to helping people find the work they love. What if our society were truly aligned with our country's mission as stated in the Preamble to the Constitution. What if the playing field between employers and employees were leveled so that it was not ONLY profits that drove the employment dynamic but that the social and individual benefit of enjoyment of work were deemed the primary but not the only reason for working. What if the balance of power were shifted to allow win/win outcomes between employers and employees so that alignment of one's most impassioned skills, personality type and temperament, personal and work values, content interests and character with organizational mission dominated the hiring process. By empowering people to define their essence, their CareerDNA, I have endeavored to do my small part in driving the quest for happiness in the world of work.

Career Assessment Services
Based on the principal that people will be more productive and fulfilled when they are doing work they canbe passionate about and which plays to their natural talents, Dr. Brian A. Schwartz, principal of The Talent Management Team, has developed a career assessment process which assists clients in organically growing the design of ideal work directly from their life experiences. He has worked with over 1700 clients in this way since 1976. The process consists of three essential elements: a battery of inventories, an intensive autobiographical counseling process leading to identifying one’s SkillsDNA and an occupations card sort. Information from each of these are then integrated into a detailed ideal job description with several career options aligned with one’s personality type, values, interests and SkillsDNA. A no cost, no obligation initial hour-long meeting is how we normally explore if and how we might be of help.
The battery of inventories include: two interest inventories, a personality inventory and Dr. Schwartz’ online career assessment and marketing plan product found at www.careerdna.net.
Clients are taken through an intensive series of sessions beginning with background information on their family of origin and proceeding through their lives until the present. Each client identifies their life highlights in a “Life Chart” documenting their achievements, accomplishments, enjoyed relationships, roles and situations. From this they select the seven most enjoyable and meaningful experiences of their life. Those top experiences are then analyzed for the transferable and self-management skills that they used and enjoyed in their top life experiences. These skills are then organized into skill teams, which, in detail, describe the roles, functions, and tasks that would be intrinsically enjoyable to each client. We call this “SkillsDNA” as no two clients have ever developed the same set of skill teams in the same way and with the same degree of importance in their SkillsDNA graphic. It is one’s career “fingerprint". Parallel to this designing of the template for ideal work satisfaction is an analysis of the client’s internal barriers to success, if any. Formulating the principle that “People achieve the level of success that their self-esteem will absorb,” Dr. Schwartz is particularly adept at helping clients identify the external and internal barriers to their success. The program includes developing the marketing materials and plan necessary to make the career assessment actionable i.e.resume, cover letters, elevator pitch and interview preparation using the marketing plan features of www.careerdna.net. Dr. Schwartz may then have the client work with a “talent agent” to ensure that each client gets the support and even direct contacts they need to translate their profile into actionable results.
The process takes approximately 20-30 hours. Fees include a $150 test fee, free one-year use of CareerDNA and session fees of $250/hour. Client meetings are generally two hours in length although longer and more frequent meetings are arranged for clients traveling from a long distance.
