Sometimes, “life just happens” (and I know a thing or two about life happening!) And when it does, there are days when everything can just feel overwhelming.Your energy level drops, apathy sets in and you’re just ready to throw in the towel, back down, or just plain quit. This can show up in many forms. It may look like settling for something that we don’t really want, but fear that we can do no better, pretending that our goal or desire was never really that important, or simply and quietly burying a dream. Often times what you need most is a little retreat to rest, recuperate and regroup. But ironically it’s at the moment of defeat, or after a big let down, that we feel the least able to let ourselves off the hook with some kindness and self-care.

Those of you who know me have often heard me talk about self care. It’s essential to remaining vital, vibrant, creative and productive. I’m not talking about bubble baths and massages here, (although both are wonderful and much appreciated!) What I’m referring to is caring for your body and soul, and nourishing yourself mentally, emotionally and creatively. This will allow you to endure the setbacks that are inevitable in life, and to build and grow over the long run.

We’ve all had days when….the car broke down, too many clients cancelled, people didn’t show up, everyone said no, your wallet got stolen, you lost your keys, your best friend lied and your feeling were deeply hurt. These are the days when we're tired, hurt, scared, discouraged, out of patience, low on money or feeling just “not enough”. It happens. And the remedy while part perseverance, is always easier when supported with self-care.

I’m not going to give you the pep talk here with something about it always being darkest just before daylight….or however that saying goes. And I’m not even sure that it’s entirely true. But there is truth in the fact that everything you’ve worked for, all the time and money you’ve spent on education, personal-growth, and building your life to the point it’s at today is lost the moment you decide to give up and quits. If you’re at that dark place, of feeling like your back is against the wall, it’s simply time for a break and some heartfelt love and caring for yourself; for the person you are, and the person you’d like to be.

A couple of years ago after going through a particularly rough time in life, I took an entire year off as a sabbatical. Financially, it was a big decision, and sacrifices had to be made, but ultimately it was by far the single best thing I have ever done in my life. I grew as a person in ways I don’t think I could have staying at home. I felt filled up and nourished with an enormous new capacity for creativity. And yes, truly loved and cared for; from myself to myself. This alone is an incredible feeling if you are use to “pushing yourself hard and carrying on”. Since then, my business has also grown in leaps and bounds, and it just wouldn’t have been possible without extreme self care.

This week, or this month, If your back is against the wall and your ready to throw in the towel, if only for an hour or a day, let yourself off the hook - really off the hook. We all do the best we can at any given moment with the knowledge, support and resources we have available to us at the time. So retreat, rest and regroup. Do what you need to to take care of you, to recharge mentally and physically. You truly deserve it, and ultimately, it creates space for new and wonderful to come in.
