Female genital rejuvenation involves several procedures. Of these, the procedures concerning the labia minora (labiaplasty) and labia majora (labia majoraplasty) are the most commonly performed. Although other procedures are performed alongside them (e.g. clitoral hood reduction), when it comes to making a vagina look better, these are the procedures most patients turn to.
Why People Get Labiaplasty and Labia Majoraplasty
Large labia, also called labial hypertrophy, is when the labia minora or labia majora grow unnaturally large. Often, if the labia minora are hanging out and down, it can be very embarrassing for the patient. Similarly, a large labia majora can lead to a bulge in tight pants or bathing suits. Additionally, with bathing suits, there is a possibility of the labia hanging out - this is a very uncomfortable reality for a lot of people.
Therefore, the reasons people opt for labiaplasty and labia majoraplasty during vaginal tightening are:
- Pain from twisting and tugging of the labia during bike-
riding and intercourse
- Itching
- Irritation
- Self-consciousness
- Labia majora are too large
- Hanging labia majora causes discomfort during cycling
- Labia majora contributes to an embarrassing fullness and bulge
So, how are the procedures done?
Labia Majoraplasty
After administering anaesthesia, the surgeon removes two small skin crescents from the inner portion of each labium. Depending on how much excess tissue is there, your surgeon excises the skin. Sometimes, there may be so much excess tissue that there is resulting atrophy of fatty tissue. When this happens, fat transfer is done, making the vagina look better and more natural. Absorbable sutures are then used to close the incisions.
Labiaplasty
The trim procedure is most common for labiaplasty. Here, extra tissue is removed and sewn up directly. The results are almost immediate. The wedge procedure is also popular since it establishes and maintains a natural border after removing a pie-shaped piece of tissue. The clitoral hood may be reduced simultaneously with this procedure. Absorbable sutures are then used to close the incisions.
Recovery
The recovery from both vaginal tightening procedures follows the same timeline and factors:
- One week off from work
- Icing the wound using the "twenty minutes on, twenty minutes
off" rule
- Lying with the bottom elevated to reduce swelling
- Intercourse and tampon-wearing can be resumed after 4-6
weeks
- Most of the swelling goes away by six weeks
- Residual swelling can take up to six months
After this procedure, the labia would have shrunk considerably, preventing any further embarrassment or pain.
