Science has already proven to us that every object we perceive is not actually solid but rather an immense collection of atoms. These atoms are continuously in motion and thus no stationary object is actually still but rather moving with life.
Whether the object is in a state of gas, liquid or solid, the atoms are merely held closely together by varying degrees of magnetic forces. The movement of all these atoms constantly in motion produces sound. In fact, everything we hear is simply a matter of sound waves traveling through the air that gets interpreted by the brain. But is it possible that sounds can make us aware of God’s Presence?
Every word we use to communicate is the result of controlled movements of our larynx that produce vibrations to convey ideas. What most of the masses fail to realize is that man, being made in the image of God, has the ability to create on a microcosmic scale that same way as the Father. All of experience begins with a simple thought. That thought can remain just an idea on an ideational level or can descend into vibrational form as expressed sound. Thoughts can become words and actions. All of creation is God’s thought that has taken shape through the use of “mass-less” atoms, which become organized into the elements of ether, air, fire, water and matter. All of these atoms under the spell of Maya (delusion) imagine themselves to be separate entities and thus are able to interact with each other to become individual “things” unaware that they all originate from the same Source.
If we were able to hear the sounds of the universe it would sound like the constant humming drone of Om. In fact, many have been blessed to hear this sound in deep meditation. Om is known as the primordial sound – the unmanifest reality/unreality where matter meets non-matter or Spirit. Essentially, before existence and beyond existence there is only One Reality. That Source has its first manifestation in existence as Om (Aum). “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1
This primordial sound of Om is known as the source of all mantras. A mantra is composed of two roots: “man” which means mind and “tra” which means instrument. Thus, together you have mantra or “instrument of the mind.” Om represents the totality of creation, preservation and dissolution. From Om come other mantras or sounds like rivers branching off from the one original body of water. These “offshoots” of the original sound are what bring creation into manifestation and become every object of the heavens and the earth. Thus creation consists of nothing more than vibrations at various frequencies and amplitudes giving rise to the phenomena of the world. These vibrations also become our vowels, consonants, words, verbs, adverbs, nouns and language which become visually reflected through our intelligence as symbolic letters and written word.
In fact, it has been stated: “The mute consonants represent the earth, the sibilants the sky and the vowels the heavens… The mute consonants represent fire, the sibilants air and the vowels the sun… The mute consonants represent the eye, the sibilants the ear and the vowels the mind!”
Similar to the way bodies of water develop weaker currents and become more shallow the further away from the original ocean from which they came; the same way certain vibrations and thus words become less “pure” the further away they’ve evolved from the primordial sound of Om. Likewise, one can retrace his way back to Pure Consciousness through the use of mantras that are purer in form because they reflect vibrations and thus ideas that are closer to the One Reality. Through the repeated expression of a mantra or simply a prayer, it has been shown one can uplift their spirits, heal their bodies and experience the deepest, blissful states of awareness in meditation.
The irony is that by silently repeating a mantra as you meditate, you create a powerful way to enter the Silence of the mind. As you focus on the mantra, it becomes increasingly more abstract and indistinct. Like the salmon swimming upstream you’re finally led into the Infinite expansion of stillness; the field of Pure Consciousness from which the vibration arose. In the deepest meditative state, all thoughts and worries drop away and you experience the Quiet that always exists beneath the noisy internal dialogue of the mind. In this stillness you may feel oneness with all life and profound peace and bliss. Through these repeated efforts you are led to the Source of all sounds and the Consciousness of Life Itself. “Be still and know tha t I am God.” Psalm 46:10
