What do you think of when someone refers to artificial intelligence? The goal of artificial intelligence (AI) is to “replicate or simulate human intelligence in machines” (“What Is Artificial Intelligence? How Does AI Work?”). In regards to artificial intelligence, there are numerous different opinions. Some think that the use of machines will take away jobs. Some think this is an incredible advancement in technology that has unlimited possibilities. Some look at this as a bad idea because of all the unknowns related to artificial intelligence. As the world progresses, there will be a multitude of advancements that do not seem achievable at the moment. This paper will discuss how artificial intelligence has positively impacted different industries.
How does it work?
According to SAS Institute, “AI works by combining large amounts of data with fast, iterative processing and intelligent algorithms, allowing the software to learn automatically from patterns or features in the data”. Although created in the 1950s, AI has become increasingly popular. The publics' perception of artificial intelligence usually regards the use of robots to fulfill tasks that usually require humans. While scientists are working to create this type of artificial intelligence, there are other goals for AI. Also, from the SAS Institute Inc., "AI has become more popular today thanks to increased data volumes, advanced algorithms, and improvements in computing power and storage".
Artificial intelligence is commonly used in our everyday activities. Some examples of common artificial intelligence include face detection and recognition, search recommendation algorithms, and Siri.
AI in Medical Devices
The medical industry has made work to improve a lot of their technology. This industry needs new tools and further advancement to improve patient’s quality of life. These advancements may also help people live longer and cure diseases. Artificial Intelligence has developed a multitude of innovative technologies to work to better this industry. In June of 2017, the FDA approved a diabetic machine that helps to improve Medtronic. According to Emerj, The AI Research and Advisory Company, “The medical device maker claims that the system automates the delivery of a baseline level of insulin to stabilize blood glucose throughout the day and night”. This device connects to an app on the phone to help patients have a better way of life. The app furthers this innovation by offering new information regarding patients’ glucose patterns. There is also food logging, which helps patients to track their food plans. Emerj analyzed a report done by StarTribune that stated Medtronic was predicted: “to increase its market dominance to an estimated 74 percent (up from 61 percent) by 2019” (Sennaar). Significant improvements have been made by this diabetic machine to improve the quality of life. As mentions by Emerj, GE Healthcare and NVIDIA have joined forces to use “AI to improve the speed and accuracy of computerized tomography (CT)”. This is one of the most common ways to obtain x-ray scans of a person’s body.
This new FDA approved AI technology has increased efficiency to twice as fast compared to the past CT machine (Sennaar). This is remarkable technology is predicted to speed up treatment and the accuracy of these scans. These are just two ways artificial intelligence has influenced and innovated the medical field.
Computer Vision
Computer vision is a section of artificial intelligence that affects most of our everyday lives. The Pew Research Center has found that 96% of people that live in the United States own some type of phone (“Demographics of Mobile Device Ownership and Adoption in the United States”). This statistic does not include the people that own computers, tablets, etc. Computer vision has helped people to have better quality photos and smoothly use their electronic devices. These features were not capable without computer vision. Computer vision determines the quality of the photos. This gives cameras the ability to turn pixels into images. From these images, computers can begin to analyze and interpret photographs. Computer and other technologies can classify images into different groups.
For example, if you put a person in front of a camera the computer would be able to tell that is a person. iPhones can even group pictures of similar faces into different categories. Object detection determines the differentiation of similar objects, like different people within a group (Venables). Computer vision is used in various instances, some of which one may not realize. Apple and different social media apps use facial recognition to automatically unlock profiles.
Military Advancements
One of the biggest controversial topics regarding AI is the use of artificial intelligence within the military. The military suffers from high death rates and would benefit from increased knowledge in battle. Many people are worried that artificial intelligence will be improperly used and managed by the military resulting in negative consequences. Government officials strongly disagree and are working to develop new technologies using AI. The government officials hope this will lead to lower death rates and increased knowledge during battle. The military has introduced the idea of Aided Threat recognition from the Mobile Cooperative and Autonomous Sensors program (ATR-MCAS), which uses AI technology to help soldiers predict and examine possible threats. This program consists of vehicles with attached sensors.
According to the U.S. Army, “The vehicles carry sensors enabling them to navigate within areas of interest to identify, classify, and geo-locate entities, obstacles, and potential threats which reduces the cognitive load on Soldiers” (Ferraris). This technology is capable of analyzing the information found and providing soldiers with recommendations for possible strategies.
Automobile Industry
In 2010, one of the craziest AI inventions was released to the public. Tesla launched a car that could drive itself. This electric car has full autopilot capabilities along with an advanced battery and solar panel technology. According to Tesla, "advanced AI for vision and planning, supported by efficient use of inference hardware is the only way to achieve a general solution to full self-driving" (Autopilot). This car shows how amazing AI technology can be and how it can be offered to the public. AI technology is not just for people in the military or only used in a medical situation. AI technology is something that benefits everyone with its mind-blowing technologies.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the past, current, and future use of artificial intelligence will positively influence a multitude of industries. This essay has only listed a few of the industries affected by artificial intelligence. This is a technology used within the lives of everyday humans. The majority of people use technology and further advancements are made to increase the use of artificial intelligence in day-to-day use. Exceptional advancements have been made to artificial intelligence and this is just the beginning. While AI was created in the 1950s, the majority of popular advancements were invented within the past two decades. With increased research, artificial intelligence can progress our quality of life in an infinite number of ways.
