There are plenty of supplements on the market today, and there is a lot of hype around, but which ones are actually worth taking? In terms of preventing the two biggest causes of death, cancer and heart disease, there is no doubt that taking fish oil with natural coenzyme Q10 is one of the best preventative measures that one can take.

Heart disease: Plenty of research has shown that coenzyme Q10 is needed to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. As a matter of fact, heart failure and Q10 deficiency are inextricably linked. Furthermore, cholesterol-lowering drugs are known to decrease the amount of coenzyme Q10 produced by the liver. Studies in the last decade have proven that coenzyme Q10 actually enters the LDL (or "bad" cholesterol) molecule and stops it from becoming oxidized and causing damage to blood vessels. This is very important, as it is only the oxidized form of LDL that is dangerous and not the LDL molecule itself.

Coenzyme Q10 is much more efficient when taken with concentrated fish oil. Fish oil lowers bad cholesterol, triglycerides and homocysteine (all factors that increase the probability of getting heart disease) and increases HDL cholesterol.

Another reason to take this type of supplement is that it has been shown to reduce cancer risk in populations all over the world. Generally, populations that eat a large amount of fatty fish tend to have lower rates of cancer than other populations. It is particularly effective in preventing prostate cancer and breast cancer, due to the fact that the polyunsaturated fatty acids DHA and EPA, which are the key constituents of fish fat, actually block the hormones that cause this type of cancer. Specifically, in the case of breast cancer, concentrated fish oil has been shown to decrease the amount of estradiol found in the blood. High estradiol levels make breast cancer worse.

Unfortunately, the modern diet is very poor in both Q10 and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Most people do not have time to cook the proper meals and a lot of the food we eat nowadays is not natural. It has been found that, for example, beef which is raised on grass has a much higher content of coenzyme Q10 than grain-fed beef does. To top it all off, most of the fish available in supermarkets today is contaminated with heavy metals, chemicals and perhaps even radiation.

This is the reason why I take a Q10 fish oil every day. I find that it makes me feel better and have seen very good result in my blood tests, including lower triglycerides, low LDL and much lower homocysteine levels than I had previously.
