I love concerts in the park, watching dancing in an outdoor pavilion, or hearing a choir sing in the great outdoors. There is nothing like sitting on the grass being witness to those who have musical talent. I grew up in a musical family, I love all kinds from jazz and blues to rock to country. I played in the school band, but can honestly say, it was not a natural talent of mine.
The concerts I seem to enjoy the most recently are those that nature provide. At any time of the day I can step outside and tune in to the concerts all around me being sung by the birds, the bees the bugs and the frogs. It is always music to my ears. Over the past couple of years I have been paying particular attention to these serenades.
I have a few particular birds that seem to come along and sit and call me out of the house. One may think this is crazy but when you start to put your awareness to what is really going on you will realize they are wanting your attention. My neighbor has a television antenna that I can see out the window by my computer desk. It seems to me that when I have not been outside in a while either the blue jay, the cardinal or the robin will sit on the antenna looking directly in my window and sing or chatter until they get my attention. Once I get up and go outside, the move to a different perch and sing a beautiful song.
There are days when I feel like sleeping in, and yet I know I need to get up, and right outside my bedroom window that cardinal will sing away until I am up. Birds and animals sense more than we realize, when I am having an emotional day, or just down in the dumps kind of day, they gather around in the trees in my back yard and sing sweet melodies to me. It is so soothing and comforting to know they are there, and they want me to feel better. I started looking up the meaning and the messages that each bird carries for us. And each time the message was exactly what I needed on that particular day.
As I sit in the quiet of the evening, relaxing and allowing the day to fall away, the cardinal comes and sits high atop the evergreen and sings his evening chorus. The frogs join in as if to offer the bass and the rhythm with their deep croak. The cardinal fades away with the sun and the frogs become the tune, the lightening bugs the side show. Oh how I love to hear the frogs in the neighbor hood as they all seem to join in at different times and create a symphony of song for anyone paying attention. This reminds me of being a child, chasing the lightening bugs, later falling asleep to the sound of the frogs in the tent on the front lawn. Perhaps that is the message they are trying to relay, let go and be a kid again. So often as adults we don’t allow ourselves this freedom to just be a child at play.
The beauty of my back yard serenades are that I don’t have to step out of the moment, get in the car, battle traffic to get home, I simply get up walk in the house, and I am there. The cost to me is simply my attention and awareness. I am not disturbed by others and their opinions of the songs being played. I can close my eyes and be anywhere in the world as the music flows through me, open them and be on my back deck.
I thank the universe for the free concerts in the park that I am able to tune into when ever I choose to. Thank you for the messages that they carry at just the right moment. Thank you for taking me back to my childhood memories. Thank you for propelling me to where ever it is I want to be in the world while I listen to the song. Thank you for bringing me into the moment.
