There are times in which it’s to your benefit to consider an out-of-state candidate over an in-state one. This does not come without some inherent risks on your part. Here are some of the benefits that you may receive from hiring someone from another state.
Wider Range of Skillsets Available
You may find yourself having to expand your search wider in order to find a qualified candidate. The skillsets of the employees in your area may not match up with the nature of your industry. This can prove difficult to fill a position that is more specialized. In this instance, it may be beneficial to widen your hiring pool. The caution with this strategy is that you’ll have to be more selective in your choice of candidates.
More Serious Candidates
A candidate that is willing to uproot their lives may be more serious about the job. One solution to this problem is to require candidates to sign an agreement for employment. This will make them really consider staying with your company long-term. Make it clear during the interview process that you want someone to work for you for several years. Explain the advantages of your company and ask for their commitment. You may find that your choice of candidates are serious about staying with you.
Less Pressure to Fill Position
Relocating an employee isn’t something that’s going to happen overnight. You should consider this option if you aren’t in a rush to fill the position. Give yourself some time to find the right person for the job. There will be a significant expense associated with hiring someone out-of-state. Taking a little bit of time to consider all of your options will prove to be beneficial for both parties. Rushing into this type of agreement could backfire.
Additional Tax Write-Offs
You may be able to write-off some of the expenses associated with hiring out-of-state. This could be because of the additional costs that may be incurred due to moving expenses. There may be incentives to hiring a protected class of employee that wasn’t available in your area. Ask your business accountant if there are things that you can do to help with your taxes. You may even be able to assist the employee with some of their moving expenses.
Look into using a moving company to help with the relocation of your new hire. This could be the perk that you need in order to get a qualified candidate in the door.
