Most people as you know have a fear of getting up and speaking in front of an audience big or small or putting on any kind of oral performance for that matter. I have been teaching , coaching and delivering public presentations for almost nine years and have experienced many things that inhibit people from being comfortable or competent when they have to perform in front of any human being(s). I will tell you from my experience with public speaking training that the issue does not lie in just getting up in front of people to perform, most of the time it is simply that people are either not properly prepared mentally . Not being prepared mentally means not knowing how to design a presentation , how to organize and deliver your thoughts which can lead to failure and that is the true fear which is failure. These are just a few but let me illustrate an example; I have had many people tell me that they can talk one on one with confidence and ease but when it comes to the stage they are terrified and the reason they are is mostly because they are not familiar with foreign or unrehearsed material, they are great talking about something they know like themselves. It’s a big psyche game when you are on stage and the only difference is that there are more people and you don’t have the proper training to show you how to design and deliver a talk that you feel comfortable and confident with. Having your thoughts organized will quell your fear of failure which is what we “really” fear.
A good public speaking training course or workshop will show you many ways how to become a confident and fearless speaker. They will start by showing you how to actually design a presentation that you will be comfortable with so that your fear factor will decrease tremendously. You will feel confident that you will not fail with your presentation and of course eliminate fear. Knowing what you are going to say and how you will say it makes all the difference in the world. Another important thing that can be gained from attending a public speaking workshop is knowing how to engage the audience by building trust and rapport. When you feel that you have the trust of the audience this will also provide you with the confidence that you are being accepted , feeling accepted reduces fear. So as you can see most of the fear that you experience is simply just learning and knowing how to use the proper tools needed to give a fearless presentation.
