You may be fooled into thinking all carbohydrates are equal, well like with most things unfortunately they are not.
There are distinctively two forms of carbohydrates: Refined carbohydrates these are also known as Simple carbohydrates and Complex Carbohydrates
Yes you are right your body needs carbohydrates to provide glucose for it to function properly, however it needs the right carbohydrates.
However as the names suggest the Refined or Simple carbohydrates are the ones that cause the problems:
How Refined/Simple Carbohydrates damage our Health:
• They take little to no time to be break down
•They deplete the body’s nutritional stores.
•Therefore causing a large spike in blood sugar will result in a crash soon after, and that crash signals hunger and food cravings.
•The problem that this also causes is the fact you will need to eat more, this leading to overweight and obesity problems.
•The large spike in blood sugar puts enormous pressure on the pancreas and therefore has difficulty keeping up with the production of insulin, therefore leading to diabetes.
How this Happens:
Grains contain a lot of starch, which is broken down into sugar by the digestive tract.
Refined grains such as those found in highly processed breads convert rapidly into simple sugars and have the same problems as refined sugars.
They will have an adverse effect to our brain and nervous system, by making it difficult to think straight.
Then just to add fuel to the fire, these simple carbohydrates spike insulin production, which contributes to chronic inflammation and obesity.
The average person consumes between 250 to 350 kilos of refined sugar per year. That’s about 1 to 2 kilos per day!
Where Refined/Simple Carbohydrates are Found
Simple carbohydrates include sugars found in foods such as fruits, (especially high in dried and tinned fruits) milk products: Also the sugars that are added during food processing such as white flour such as cakes, biscuits, white bread, lollies, tinned foods these all have added sugars are called Bad carbohydrates.
These foods should be either eliminated all together, or kept at a very bare minimum.
As we are well aware there is an ever increasing growing health problem with obesity.

Complex carbohydrates:
Complex carbohydrates on the other hand take time to break down into glucose, therefore giving the body time to adjust and metabolise the nutrients properly.
Complex carbohydrates are foods rich in fibre and full of great nutritive value for us, these are known as Good Carbohydrates and can be found in:
Whole-grain products such as brown rice, whole-grain pasta, beans, whole wheat bread, whole oats, buckwheat, millet, whole rye, whole-grain barley and whole-grain corn are considered good carbohydrates. These foods are rich in fibre, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that are beneficial to your health. Also, they have a low glycaemic index because they cause a slower change in blood sugar levels. Diets rich in high glycaemic index foods cause a rapid rise in blood glucose levels, thereby increasing the risk for diabetes and heart disease. By contrast, foods with a low glycaemic index help you achieve a more stable blood sugar and improve weight loss and control Type 2 diabetes.
Fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins, nutrients and carbohydrates. People who consume about 2,000 calories per day should eat 2 cups of fruit and 2.5 cups of vegetables daily. Legumes such as beans, peas and lentils are high in fibre, carbohydrates and protein and low in fat. Legumes may decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and prostate cancer, reports the Linus Pauling Institute. On a 2,000-calorie daily diet, you should eat 3 cups of legumes a week.
