Do you live in the past, the present or the future? Might sound like an odd question, but the majority of people, entrepreneurs included, rarely are in the present. There is so much that goes on in your daily life, whether someone wants something from you, planning to take care of the things on your to-do list, or changing a part of your business for improved results. Thoughts will stray to something which already occurred or something about to happen. When your thoughts are either in the past or considering the future, you are not in the present.

You might wonder how that is so? Consider how often you are driving on the highway, it is a route you take all the time. You finally arrive at your exit but you can’t really remember the drive to get there. Or think about when you take a shower. You wash yourself in the same order each and every time. It is familiar and rote. You don’t realize you are doing it. Instead your mind is wondering to something else. It is easy to distract ourselves from the here and now.

These are some of the many instances where you check out during your day. You couldn’t possibly attend to everything happening during the course of the day. You would become overwhelmed, shut down and unable to act on anything.

Our physical bodies operate on automatic. We take healthy functioning for granted.

Breathing. You just became aware of your breath because I bought it to your awareness, your stream of consciousness. How many breaths did you take automatically? Hundreds, thousands, even millions.

Your breath, however, is a way of bringing you back from the past or future into the present. If you focus on your breath tuning into the rhythm, clearing your mind of other thoughts, you will become aware of what is happening in the moment, the here and now. I am not talking about meditation, although that is a wonderful way of staying present focused. This is about bringing you back into your body, into the present moment. Centering your focus to what is occurring now.

Breath is important. When done consciously, it has additional benefit. Your breath is connected to intuition. Awareness of your breath elevates your intuition.

Intuition is the opposite of logic. Intuition is a feeling; logic is a thought.

A gut feeling, a hunch, sense of knowing, or a thought which pops into your mind all of a sudden, are all one and the same. Intuition.

Think of when you did something. It probably didn’t make any sense at the time, but worked out in your favor. Was it the time when you called someone you haven’t spoken to for a long time or you said something without censoring it? You had a sense and just did it. Going with your gut feeling, following through, positioned you perfectly for the next thing which followed.

This is different than second guessing yourself. Questioning your decision is related to your thoughts. Your thoughts are based upon logic. Logic, however, is not always associated with reality. Logic is connected to meaning we created based upon experiences; how we perceived something.

You possess the ability to talk yourself into, or out of, any opportunity. Every decision you make, every action you take, is related to your emotions. Everything you choose to do, or not do, is to either feel a certain way or avoid feeling something. Once again, it all goes back to your emotions.

Become aware of when you are not in the moment. Refocus yourself by tuning into your breath. If you have a hunch, while consciously breathing, follow through with it and see how it works out. When you think it through too much you might miss the opportunity because intuition is not based upon logic. Your logic, however, is not always based upon facts. It is based upon perceptions related to emotions.

Activity: When you feel that you are not present, choose to center yourself by taking three deep breathes. Some people have a stronger sense of intuition than others. It is like a muscle which becomes stronger with use. The more you clear your mind and allow thoughts to flow without having any attachment to them, the more you will become aware of your intuition. Begin to journal the ideas, hunches or gut feelings you have throughout the day. Then review them several days later and see how many of those were right. As you continue to do this your confidence with your inner voice will grow. By the way, your intuition will always guide you in the right direction.
