Whether you have a large outdoor deck or a smaller patio attached to your apartment, this area can be used as a relaxing sanctuary as well as a place to entertain. Whether your patio is large or small, the refreshing outdoor atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to create your own personal sanctuary. By following feng shui guidelines, you can make your patio an even more effective area for relaxing. Here are a few tips that you can use to create your own patio sanctuary.
Assess Your Space
Before you start the planning process, it's important to take the time to truly assess and evaluate your available space. Take note of the overall size and shape of the patio, as well as its surroundings. Does the patio get a lot of sun, or is it primarily shaded? Are there clearly marked paths or stairs leading to the patio, or do your yard and patio simply blend naturally together? Does your patio provide you with plenty of privacy, or do you need a wall or fence installed in order to create some private space? The answers to these questions will help you as you work towards creating your personal sanctuary.
Feng Shui Principles
When decorating your patio, it's important to remember that in most cases, the area represents the back entryway to your home. As such, you should implement the standard feng shui practices to encourage the entry of positive energy while discouraging the entry of negative entry. Additionally, when creating an area for the purpose of reflection and sanctuary, it's best to focus on Yin décor. If you have previously used your entire patio for entertainment purposes, it's likely that you have more Yang décor. Additionally, if your patio is made from concrete, you'll want to add more wood décor to add a more Yin atmosphere. Concrete is rather neutral, since it is representative of the Earth element. By adding wood furniture or décor pieces, you'll be able to transform the neutral Earth element into a more Yin environment.
If your patio or deck is already made from wood, then you already have a basically Yin environment. You can further accentuate a wood deck or patio with Fire and Water elements. For example, a small outdoor water fountain on or in the general vicinity of your deck will add a nice contemplative and relaxing touch while also adding the Water element. If you plan on using your patio sanctuary when the weather turns cooler, you might want to add a small outdoor patio fire pit. Not only will it help to keep you warm, but it will also add a nice touch of the Fire element to your surroundings.
Sound and Light
Sound and light are also important considerations when creating your patio sanctuary area. If you have already added a water fountain, then you've already addressed the sound issue to some degree. Wind chimes can also be a great way of adding a relaxing sound element. If your patio gets too much intense sunlight, a bamboo blind could be helpful. If you plan to use your patio after dark, you'll also want to include candles or a soft gentle light. The end result will be a personal sanctuary space where you can refresh and relax.
