Many people know what it’s like to work at a job and wonder when they’re getting promoted. Perhaps it’s because your boss sees you as being at the same maturity level as the time you first started working there. Yet, there is a way to improve. Here are four tips to help you improve your overall professional image which can potentially influence you being considered for a promotion:
Have a Better Attitude
Having the proper attitude is absolutely important. Your attitude should be success-driven and positive as that will be what helps a team to accomplish their goals. Basically, the mood you set as someone in a form of leadership position can determine how productive everyone is. This also helps everyone to feel confident and at ease, which can be quite influential when visitors or clients are over. When people look back on their interaction with you, they are most likely to remember the attitude that you had. Always make sure that your attitude is attractive and that will gain the attention of those in a position to promote you.
Take the Initiative
Always be willing to act. If you have an idea, don’t expect others to just act on it. Offer to head of the project that is based on your idea. If you see others are swamped with work and can take on the extra load yourself, jump in and help. When someone asks for help with anything—setting up chairs in the conference room or working on a difficult project—be the one to say, “I will!” Be enthusiastic about your willingness as well. Of course, don’t go overboard. Leaders appreciate it when employees take action without being disgruntled. As mentioned above, it’s all about attitude.
Be Willing to Involve Others
In the workplace, we can tend to get a bit introverted. Sometimes we want to do projects ourselves as we think that it would get done the quickest that way or we are more effective when working on our own. Yet, others may want to be included and projects where you can involve others are great opportunities for building relationships with both your co-workers and leaders. As you work with others well, people will see your professional image as being someone who can work with others and get things done. This is a very important part of leadership and letting others see that quality in you will make you more worthy of a promotion in the eyes of your superiors.
Have a Great Work Ethic
If you work harder than everyone else in your office, then your boss will certainly notice. This can include staying after working hours to finish a project or assisting other with finishing their own tasks. It may also include improving any metrics that your company may have to track your work. By proving that you can work hard, your leaders may be more willing to give you more work (in the form of a promotion). Because of this, you should protect your work ethic by never appearing lazy and always showing that you can handle everything.
As Mark Cuban says:
“It’s not about money or connections—it’s the willingness to outwork and outlearn everyone…and if it fails, you learn from what happened and do a better job next time.”
That is the meaning of true work ethic! Having that will only make your professional image stand out among your peers at work.
Now, there are so many things that you can do to better your professional image. Of course, your looks are a big thing as well. Don’t wear ragged clothing and try to look as sharp as you (in a way that is appropriate for your workplace). Be well groomed, take care of your hygiene, and, if necessary, get your teeth whitening done. Staying on top of your outward appearance is important for first impression’s sake, but all of the tips above are just as crucial for your overall image.
