Until quite recently I would never have considered myself to be an online gamer. In fact, I am pretty sure that apart from playing the arcade game ‘Pac Man’ back in the 1980’s, I had never actually played any other online game at all. What’s more, I used to consider the millions of people who played these games a little pathetic, and lacking worthwhile pastimes. How wrong I was.

I recently came across one of the large online skill gaming companies whilst browsing the web and thought I would find out what all the fuss was about. I decided to have a go at one of their free online pool games. No way was I going to part with any money knowing the level of whiz kid competition online today. I played a few games and I have to say, I loved it! I was officially hooked and had in the space of just a few minutes become one of those online gaming geeks I had ridiculed for years; what a hypocrite I had quickly become.

During my four years at university I had spent many a night in the pub playing pool and I became very good at it. What I noticed about the online version is that it had been designed so well that the cue power, top spin and back spin etc were almost as accurate as the real life version. I therefore found that I quickly became just as good as I had at the real life game.

Playing these free online pool games against the computer was no longer enough for my greedy soul; it was time to play for cash. There was a free online multiplayer games option where I could challenge others online for no fee but I felt that I had achieved the necessary skill level to forge ahead to the real money stage.

I uploaded some funds from my credit card and started playing again. Although I was now only putting up a £1 or £2 entry fee per game, the sudden increase in excitement over simply playing for free was palpable. Also the system was now automatically linking me up with other players from around the world who were willing to play for the same entry fee as me. I could really feel the competitiveness build as each game was played and knowing that a real person was actually playing me ‘live’ created a real buzz.

I initially played about twenty games and found that my online games bank had increased by 20%. Although this was skill just a paltry sum it really didn’t matter because I certainly was not doing this as an income generator. It was simply the fact that I was up on my initial investment and was having a fantastic time.

I then noticed that there were online pool tournaments available. Now, a whole new dynamic was created because sizable cash sums could be won. I decided to enter a 24 hour tournament for a cash prize of £500. I paid my £5 entry fee and was then permitted to play and post as many scores as I wished within this 24 hour period. The prize would then be issued to the person who registered the highest individual game score within this period. Unfortunately, I did not win and realised that I was not quite as good as I had initially thought. The top ten registered scores were far in excess of anything I could possibly have dreamed of but I really didn’t care because I never would have believed that online pool could be this entertaining.

Whether you are a real life pool player or not, come and immerse yourself in some free online pool games and you will quickly see just how addictive and highly entertaining this form of online fun can be.
