Travelling with kids can be daunting. Amongst all of the excitement for your holiday, travelling with kids undoubtedly brings bouts of worry. What if they won’t sit still on the plane? What if they cry for the entirety of the journey? What if they get home sick? As a parent, you can only do your best, and although you can’t predict how travelling with your kids will go, you can adequately prepare. To help your next trip run smoothly, have a read of our top tips.
1. Be realistic
If it’s your first time travelling with your kids, it’s important to be realistic about all aspects of your holiday. Travelling with children requires patience and understanding on your part. Try not to overdo it with your itinerary. Kids can get tired and bored much quicker than adults, so trying to stick to a busy, packed out schedule with kids involved can be more stressful than it’s worth. Take into consideration what they can handle, and plan rest around activities.
2. Bring entertainment
Regardless of how excited your child is about jetting of on holiday, travelling can take it out of them and the novelty can quickly wear off in the midst of a meltdown. Packing entertainment to keep your kids occupied can be your saving grace. Many parents will agree, one of the biggest blunders you could make is setting off on a family holiday without the iPad.
3. Ship your luggage ahead
Rushing around airports is tough, and doing so with children is even tougher, without the added stress of having to trail around heavy baggage, too. Thankfully, luggage shipping companies allow you to relieve some of that stress by shipping your luggage ahead to your destination. You can book to ship yours and your family’s luggage to your destination, helping you to save both time and money. Many luggage shipping companies offer door to door collection and delivery, meaning your bags can meet you right at your destination.
4. Get them involved
Children are always more accepting of things that they believe they have some control over. So, talk to your child about the upcoming holiday. Get them involved with the planning and make them feel part of it all. You could do this by creating an exciting holiday countdown.
5. Bring a small bag
Depending on your child’s age and if they are occupying a seat on the plane, they may be permitted to bring on board a piece of carry-on baggage. If your child’s ticket doesn’t include this, consider adding this option to your booking. You can pack their bag with things like forms of entertainment, some treats, a blanket in case they get cold, and a first aid kit.
