Losing your hair isn’t really anything that a man should be ashamed of. It’s something that’s probably going to happen to all men at some point in their lives.

For some people they might still have a full head of hair well into their 60’s, 70’s and beyond but for others it could happen sooner.

A lot sooner in some cases. There’s men out there that don’t even last twenty years before they start losing their hair.

If you are losing your hair very young, it could just be as a result of your genetic makeup, but it could also be as a consequence of something else that can be prevented.

It could be some action you are taking that is causing your hair loss. Here’s five things that can cause hair loss in men.

1. Anemia

Anemia can come in a few different forms, but the most common strain of it is caused by an iron deficiency.

It’s an affliction that affects a lot of people and because the symptoms are things like fatigue, pale skin and muscular weakness, it often goes unnoticed.

People brush off those things as being generally rundown and don’t look for answers. When anemia gets really bad, your body essentially goes into survival mode.

This means that you will unknowingly be channelling oxygen to support vital functions and hair growth isn’t one of these things.

The good news with this one is that this won’t cause permanent damage to your hair follicles. Your hair just won’t grow properly until you fix your iron deficiency.

Anemia can be treated, there’s even some great home remedies for it. Don’t self-diagnose though, if you think that that’s your problem then consult with a physician.

2. Overstyling

The more effort you put into making you hair look good, the more likely you hair to struggle with hair loss.

This is a pretty tough pill to swallow but unfortunately it does seem to be the case. Things like hot oil treatments or shampoos with harsh chemicals can cause damage to your roots.

Even some brands of hair gel can have this effect. When the root becomes too damaged there’s not a whole lot you can do.

This isn’t just head hair either, you should be careful about what you put into your beard too if you want that to stay healthy.

A good beard trimmer is really all you need for that, but when it comes to you head, you should be extra careful there.

Try and use organic products and if you have a longer style, avoid anything that puts too much strain on your roots.

Don’t go overboard with top-knots or corn rows. It might be a bit of a job to find the right products and styles to work for you, but it could also prevent your hair loss.

3. Stress

If there is one thing on this list that shouldn’t come as a surprise to you, it’s this one right here. This old reliable annoyance that we call stress.

Stress and hair loss have been linked in our minds for a long time but oddly enough, most kids of stress won’t cause you to lose your hair.

It’s the very intense emotional or physical stress that’s going to give you trouble in this area, not the kind of stress that we all deal with on a daily basis.

So it could be as a result of a severe illness or a serious accident. Something that puts an intense amount of physical pressure on you.

Or on the emotional side of things, it could be the consequence of something like severe anxiety or depression.

If this is the case, you probably have more urgent problems than hair loss, but that is one of the many ways in which you’ll be affected.

If you need therapy or perhaps even medication to keep your stress levels down, then keeping your hair will just be an added bonus.

4. Bad Diet

Make no mistake about it. Your diet impacts absolutely everything. Your energy levels, your immune system, your skin and yes, your hair too, it’s all impacted by diet.

All of these things need certain nutrients to grow and maintain their strength, and so if you’re not eating right then your hair will reflect that.

You need a diet that’s high in protein for one thing, your body may ration protein elsewhere if there is too little of it in your system.

Even if you’re a vegetarian or a vegan there is plenty of foods you can eat to ensure that your protein intake stays nice and high.

You also need to have a lot of iron in your diet as we already discussed as well as enough zinc and biotin too.

5. Autoimmune Issues

There is a specific autoimmune disease called alopecia areata which causes your hair to fall out in patches.

It’s an unfortunate condition that happens to people as a result of an overactive immune system. It causes your body to see hair as a foreign body and target it.

If this is the case, lifestyle and diet changes are probably not going to make too much of a difference, you’ll have to find alternative routes.

As with any illness, you shouldn’t just assume that you have this. Consult with your doctor and then if it is alopecia areata that’s causing your hair loss, you can take it from there.

The usual treatments are steroid injections as well as certain drugs like Rogaine.

Conclusion

If all of these things are in order for you and your still losing your hair, that’s not necessarily the end of the world.

There’s still other things that could be causing the problem, and there’s also a bunch of different things you can try that might prevent male pattern baldness.

And if not, that’s still probably okay. Most men eventually make their peace with hair loss, and you can too.
