As a society, we spend hundreds of billions of dollars each year to feel better but does that get us any closer to our health and wellness goals. US Marketdata Inc. a market research company estimates that $58 billion is spent each year on weight loss and diet products in the United States but most people do not reach their weight goals. Additionally, people spend more than $195 billion on pharmaceutical products each year to get relief from a condition but these drugs do not address overall health.

For years people have been chasing temporary solutions for their health when there has been an approach cultures have used for centuries that can address these and other health goals. Feng Shui is a powerful practice the Chinese and other Eastern Cultures have used for more than 3,000 years to improve health and wellness. Feng Shui is not magic and it’s not a religious belief system, it’s the art and science of adjusting a person’s living space or work space to achieve specific goals. Feng Shui allows us to see how specific sectors of our living space relate to areas of health, money, relationships and other aspects of our everyday lives. And by making these adjustments to these sectors, a person can bring positive energy or “chi” to energize their goals.

This may seem like an abstract concept but Feng Shui can provide real tangible results for people. In my 15-years as a Feng Shui Practitioner, I have help clients address a wide variety of health and wellness goals. Here are some of the most common requests from clients and some simple tips you can apply at home:

1. Improving Poor Sleep Habits – If a person is having trouble sleeping at night, there are several Feng Shui tips that can help. First, point is to clean-up the bedroom. Clutter in a room tends to hold onto negative energy. Next, look at the position of the bed - Placing the bed in the “Commanding Position” promotes good health. The bed should be positioned so that when you sleep, you are able to see the door. Also look at the ceiling of the bedroom. If the ceiling is sloped, then it’s “pushing energy down on the sleeping person.” You can cure this by putting a plant in each corner of the room – The plant will “lift up” the energy.

Other issues contributing to poor sleep may be the color of the walls. Although blue tones are popular colors to paint boys rooms and pinks, purples or yellow colors are popular for girls, these colors represent water and constant moving energy – a distraction to sleep. Finally, if there is a bathroom attached to the bedroom, always keep the bathroom door shut and the toilet seat down. In Feng Shui, the bathroom drains energy. Think of it this way, your health is energy and if the bathroom door is open, your positive energy is going right down the drain, or even worse, right down the toilet.

2. Eliminating Stress & Fatigue – Stress and fatigue affect every person at from time to time and if stress is a constant in a person’s life, it can lead to deficiencies in the immune system, high blood pressure and heart disease. So how can Feng Shui help reduce stress – Look at what’s going on in the center of your living space. Once again, eliminate any clutter from the center of the living space. This principle applies all your important spaces. If you have stairs in the center of the living space, it can represent an “up and down” issue regarding health. If this is the case in your home, place a hanging crystal at the top of the stairs with an intention of holding the energy at the top so the up and down health will not occur. Another common issue is when a bathroom is located in the center of the living space. Three easy cures for bathrooms include; always have the toilet seat down so energy can’t escape, keep bathroom doors closed and out of view, place a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door to keep energy from flowing down the drain along with health.

3. Weight Loss & Fitness – What do you see first when you walk into your kitchen? If it’s the refrigerator, you may want to consider some Feng Shui remedies. Place a flowering plant or bowl of fruit on the counter between the kitchen entry and the refrigerator. It’s more than notion of “out of sight, out of mind.” The refrigerator is an “energy magnet” and it may draw you to it even when you aren’t hungry. The plant or bowl of fruit helps reduce the urge to snack. Take a look at your kitchen counter tops; do not store knives on the counters or overload with gadgets. Color plays an important role in the kitchen. Decorate your walls in calm earth-tones, green colors are the best for the kitchen. Avoid firey colors like red, orange, bright yellow and magenta pink.

Good health and wellness is not just physical, it’s also state of mind that begins with what we think. By making important adjustments to our living space, you can promote conditions that will reflect back on your health and well-being. There is no magic pill that cures all health issues but there is one place to start. Feng Shui is a foundation that you can use to strengthen your health and wellness goals.
